When the Grant Came knocking…
It’s hard to think back over the past few months without being in awe of every last detail coming together in such perfect orchestration. I never imagines starting a non-profit, but here I am smack dab in the midst of it. When life aligns and gifts come flooding in, you never slam the door, but instead open and welcome whatever is present. Late last year, that gift was a call about a grant to provide services to our community. My goals were simple:
Develop awareness surrounding the services of doulas
Develop a diverse groups of doulas to serve our area
Provide prenatal, birth and postpartum services to the community
Increase satisfaction surrounding the birth process.
Decrease rates of infant and maternal morbidity and mortality
Provide education to pregnant people so they can speak up for themselves when able
Provide doulas who know how to assist in advocacy of the pregnant person
Have the ability to ensure doulas were paid an equitable rate for their services instead of relying on volunteers who burn out easily.
In November 2021, this wasn’t on my radar, but by December, it was all a reality. Thanks to a sizable grant gifted to Kentucky doulas by Anthem Medicaid of Kentucky, we have been able to meet and exceed those initial goals.
Our team consists of women of color, those with diverse backgrounds, and those who are fluent in Spanish and ASL. We have doulas who cater to those in the city limits and others who serve in rural communities. We have aided in the birth and postpartum are of people in the state and continue to fill the calendar with even more. We are so happy you found us and an’t wait to work with you!
